Work on Chapter 3 begins soon! It has been a rough year, so a late start (usually I begin in August/September). I'm also going to trial going back to traditional mediums (ink, watercolour) even though it will slow down the process considerably. But I currently want to be more slow and intentional with my work. I'm hoping updates won't lag because I still have quite a backlog! I'll update the process as I go in the notes here :)

This was super fun working out letter for the explosion!

While I have your attention here, I'd like to direct you to this petition to the House of Commons in Canada to deal with consumer protection/stop credit card companies from blocking what we can buy (particularly in regards to nsfw artwork). Even if you don't purchase adult content, something like this is worth paying attention to because what does/doesn't get labelled as pornography or explicit is deeply subjective (as we see now, where near anything lgbtq+ is being targeted).

Credit card companies threaten the livelihood of talented artists every day, and their ban on "offensive" content quickly slips into scary authoritarian bans.

Did I unnecessarily draw that embroidered pattern by hand? Yes 😫

The pattern here, and some of the patterns seen later, are heavily inspired by and lifted from Polish folk costumes, specifically Krakow here (there were regional variances between costumes).

Again, this is another page where the environmental story-telling of Children of Men inspired me. I wanted a sense of shortage and control/limit of herbs (usually associated with witchcraft).

In completely other news, but worth recommending here: I was reminded of John Berger's Ways of Seeing as I recommended it to some friends this weekend. Ways of Seeing was a direct challenge western culture aesthetics, and to challenge viewers to see the messaging and ideologies inherent in art. I really feel like it's mandatory viewing for all folks!

Page 4/5 - Pattern Making

When initially planning out this comic it wasn't to be in black and white, and so I had to think about how to distinguish clothes of the magic world from the regular world. Pattern-making was my solution, and convenient as it also tied into some of my themes looking at the erosion of distinct slavic culture through Catholic domination. While this didn't strictly happen through pattern-making, much of slavic pagan ritual involved sewing and embroidery, and these patterns were made with specific intention (and that's a kind of ritual).

The billboard reads "avoiding fertility tests is a crime"

Little known influence on this comic (and big influence of mine overall) is the movie Children of Men. I am nowhere near as masterful as Cuarón, but I thought of the casual world-building through the environment of that movie and sought to replicate some of that in this comic-- through signs posted and revealing what items/resources are scarce.

This is one of those pages I had fun writing/thumbnailing/imagining, but agonized over the execution. In the end, I wish I had done more and labored a bit more over the pile of body parts. But, I think it still gets the point across!

Hi all!

So excited to put this comic up online! I intended to do this earlier, but all the comic festival circuits got me and overwhelmed me. Plus, I wanted to have a solid backlog to publish while I continued to work on it behind the scenes.
